Holly Rey – Gears Up To Release Her Unconditional Stripped EP On The 29th Of April

Written by on April 19, 2022

When a song has a well produced full sound to it, there is always the question of how it would sound without all the tampering with vocals, instrumentals, or technology. Stripping back, is 100% real sound. It is just the song, the lyrics, the artist and their emotions. Over the last two years everyone has felt the shift towards a more raw and honest version of themselves. During the process of creating the full version of the Unconditional EP, Holly had also created some stripped back versions for various live streaming performances. This fed her desire to create an official “Stripped” back Ep that stripped the music down bare relying on vocals and live instrumental accompaniments to move the piece.

Recording a stripped down project for a full release has been something Holly Rey has always wanted to accomplish as an artist. Among other reasons, Rey wanted to create alternative versions of the original songs from the Unconditional EP to convey a different side of herself as an artist. She wanted to shed a light on a less-touched voice allowing listeners to pay more attention to the lyrics, song structure and arrangements. With Dance Music the vocals often get lost in all the heavy beats and multiple instruments and Holly hopes to showcase a different side to herself through this project as well as her easy approach to vocal performance. She wanted to create a project where her songwriting directly reaches the audience’s heart through a different artistic interpretation of a collection of songs.

Commercial artists don’t often get to do passion projects, particularly when they are driving independent careers. During 2021 SAMPRA launched their Development Fund and it opened a window of opportunity for Holly to bring her dream project to life. The SAMPRA Development Fund (“The Fund”) is the Corporate Social Investment (CSI) arm of SAMPRA. Its mandate is to contribute meaningfully to the development and sustainability of SAMPRA members.

The Fund’s vision is to promote the value of South African recorded music with the aim of providing SAMPRA members with strategic opportunities to stimulate their growth, development, sustainability and social awareness.

The Fund’s intention is to do all the above while also contributing positively towards recording artists’ welfare and wellbeing.

Being a recipient of the Development Fund provided Holly Rey with the perfect opportunity to take a step back from her comfort zone and create the “Unconditional – Stripped EP” The EP is set to release through Orchard Music on the 08th of April.
